Step 1: Raw material preparation;

Different raw materials will produce different kinds of chairs.

  • PP: Polypropylene Chairs. Normally PP material for outdoor chairs, plastic garden chairs, outdoor armchair plastic, stackable plastic chairs…
  • PC: Polycarbonate chairs. PC is also named Acrylic. The acrylic chair, PC table and chair, Resin Wedding Chair, and Chiavari Chair are made of PC material.
  • PET: Polyethylene Terephthalate Chairs. Because it’s not biodegradable, PET chairs are not common.
  • Nylon: Nylon also can produce chairs.
  • PVC: Polyvinyl Chloride chair. We will use PVC pipe as the legs of the chair.

Step 2: Chair mold design

The basic steps of chair mold design:
1. Plastic chair analysis: Firstly, a detailed analysis of the structure of the plastic chair is required to understand its geometric shape, dimensions, and appearance requirements.
2. Runner system design: Designing a pouring system is one of the key steps, which requires ensuring that the molten plastic can smoothly enter the mold cavity. The channels of the pouring system should be as short and straight as possible to reduce heat loss and pressure drop.
3. Structural design of the forming part: including the composition of the moving and fixed parts, ensuring that the mold can be accurately formed.
4. Ejection system design: Design an ejection system to ensure that the formed chair can be smoothly demolded.
5. Cooling system design: The design of the cooling system directly affects the molding time and needs to be optimized based on the thickness and material characteristics of the chair.
6. Consider the parameters of the injection molding machine: The chair mold should follow the injection molding machine parameters to ensure the stable operation of the mold.

Step 3: Injection the row materil

The injection molding machine will inject the melted material into the chair mold. Different materials will need different temperatures for the machine’s charging.

The PC chair material will need higher injection pressure, so the PC chair, acrylic chair, and Chiavari Chair must choose a 1000 tn injection molding machine. The outdoor chair just needs 700-800 tn machine.

Common plastic materials include polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), etc. The selection of these materials will affect the strength, durability, and appearance of the chair.

Step 4: Pressure holding and cooling;

After injecting the material into the chair mold, we need to hold the pressure and start the cooling, otherwise, it may cause problems such as shrinkage, warping, internal stress, and even production interruption in the chair product.

The cooling time mainly depends on factors such as the plastic chair’s thickness, the plastic’s thermal and crystallization properties, and the chair mold temperature. Generally speaking, the cooling time should be between 30 and 120 seconds. Excessive cooling time not only reduces production efficiency but may also lead to difficulties in demolding.

Step 5: Mold open and Ejection

After the chair cooled down. The chair mold open. The chair mold is complex, and the ejection is completed by a slider and some ejection pins in steps to de-mold the chair.

For the convenience of demolding the chair, we will invert the mold during production. This way, after being ejected, the plastic chair will automatically fall off due to the force of gravity. If removed with a robotic arm, the mold can be placed facing upwards normally.

Step 6: Assembly and packing

Plastic chairs are normally unnecessary, but some PVC chairs or Acrylic chairs may need to be assembled the legs.

Especially to the Ergonomic Chair, Office chair, Executive Mesh Chair… We have to assemble the legs, arms, with other parts.
