What is the basic function of injection Molding machine

The following seven points are the basic functions of the injection molding machine:

  • Heating and melting plastic
  • Melt delivery
  • Melt injection
  • Holding pressure
  • Cooling and solidification
  • Mold opening and ejection
  • Automatic control

An injection molding machine is a device used to inject a thermosetting or thermoplastic material into a mold in order to make plastic products of different shapes and sizes. It’s a common practice to use an injection molding machine for the mass production of products like bottles, toys, auto parts, and electrical housings. An injection molding machine has basic functions that cover two principles: heating the plastic so that it becomes molten, and applying high pressure to the molten plastic so that it is ejected and fills the cavity of the mold.

Detailed description of the basic functions of the injection molding machine

Heating and melting plastic:

  • Barrel heating: Each injection molding machine contains a barrel which is fitted with an electric heating ring meant to warm up the plastic particles in the heating barrel.
  • Screw rotation: Not only does the screw rotate in the barrel and move the plastic forward, but also provides shear force which helps in melting the plastic particles.
  • Melt formation: The screw combined with the heat provided by the barrel helps the plastic particles melt into a liquid form.

Melt delivery

Screw delivery: The screw is constantly rotating inorder to deliver the melt to the front end of the barrel which is ready for injection.

Throughout the duration of the injection molding cycle, the screw constantly rotates and moves the molten plastic toward the front of the barrel where it’s kept ready for the injection stage.

Example: Suppose a company is executing an order for cap of a plastic bottle.

The pellets go into the hopper and from there go to the barrel. Once they get to the barrel, the pellets are turned into a soft mass because of the friction due to the moving screw. And the heat from the barrels heating elements.

The efficiency of the screw delivery system is crucial for the overall quality of the final product. If the screw rotation is too slow, it may not deliver enough material to the front of the barrel. Leading to insufficient filling of the mold.
Conversely, if the screw rotates too quickly, it can overheat the plastic, causing degradation and defects in the final product.
Therefore, precise control of the screw rotation speed is essential for achieving optimal melt delivery and high-quality injection molded parts.

Melt injection

Injection unit

An injection unit comprises a screw and a nozzle that is responsible for injecting the melt into the mold.

The screw of the unit conveys the plastic material forward, and the friction between the screw and the plastic. In addition to the heat that the barrel heaters generate, results in the plastic melting.

High-pressure injection

The screw advances at a very fast speed, and the melt is injected into the cavity of the mold at very high pressure.

The machines control systems can precisely control the pressure during the injection phase. Which is customizable depending on the type of plastic used, the mold’s size and intricacy, and the attributes desired of the part that is being molded.

For instance, if a viscous plastic is being molded. It is expected that a greater amount of pumping force per volume will be used to allow the material to fill the mold adequately.

Holding pressure

The screw or plunger exerts some pressure on the melt after injection. In order to ensure that it fills the mold and that the internal defects are minimized.

Cooling and solidification

In the course of the injection molding process. Transitioning from a cooling and solidification phase is very important as it marks the change from a molten to a solid plastic item. Transitioning from this stage to the next involves the subdivided parts of the mold from both the cooling system and the solidification of the plastic inside the mold.

Cooling System

Cooling water channels are placed on the mold to pump out water to enhance the solidification of the plastic parts. And then these channels are placed in such a manner as to provide even cooling on all surfaces and avoid warping and other pattern defects.

For example, during the process of making container out of plastic materials. Above all these channels ensure their circulation serves the genetic purpose of cooling uniformly the whole surface of the mold. This guarantees that the plastic’s physical properties do not change unevenly leading to minimized shrinkage and improved precision in dimensions.

Solidification Molding

The cooling procedure will commence once the molten plastic has already been injected into the mold. Above all, it is steel or aluminum mold – the cooling system on it absorbs the heat of the plastic and this leads to its cooling, followed by solidification. This is greatly depended on the design of the mold.

For instance, in the production of plastic automotive parts. The mold is engineered with specific cooling channels to ensure that the plastic solidifies quickly and evenly. This rapid cooling helps to maintain the intricate details and tight tolerances required for these parts.

Mold opening and ejection

Mold opening mechanism: After cooling, the mold opens and prepares to eject the plastic parts.

Ejection system: The ejector pin or ejector plate ejects the plastic part from the mold to complete the demolding process.

Automatic control

Control system

Operators employ a computer control system for modern injection molding machines which enables them to set all parameters for the injection molding process.

Some of these parameters are: injection speed, injection pressure, muzzle temperature, and cooling time, etc.

Operation interface

Operators can control injection molding parameters through Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs).

They are able to see the exact phase. which the machine is on such as: injection phase, cooling phase, or mold closing phase. Also, a number of parameters together with their actual values, i.e., injection speed, pressure, and temperature, will be displayed. Also, there can be a display showing how pressure of injection changes over time (the injection pressure curve) and vice versa.

Basic functions of Haichen injection molding machine: Case analysis of ballpoint pen production

Haichen injection molding machines are designed to achieve high-precision and efficient production, and are ideal for the production of various ballpoint pen parts. And then the basic functions of Haichen injection molding machines are demonstrated through the production of ballpoint pen parts.

Heating and Melting Plastic

The heating and melting process comes first in the production of the pen barrel. In the production of pen barrels from polypropylene (PP), the material needs to be heated to around 200-250 degrees celcius. The machine makes a point to thoroughly melt it before injection.

Melt Delivery

The precisely manufactured barrel and screw allow for easy transport of the melt. And then this assures that a certain degree of temperature and pressure is maintained in the flowing plastic as it is transported towards the mold cavity. In the case of pen caps, this step is very critical to avoid the loss of pressure or any material degradation.

Melt Injection

For the ergonomically designed pen grips, the injection unit of the screw type machine fills the mold cavity with melt appropriate to the pen grips. As a result, the mold is fully filled with the plastic, which is injected at high pressure into various parts of the mold. For maximum performance, the screw and nozzle must coordinate properly to ensure that the melt is driven through with great force.

Holding Pressure

HAICHEN maintains a holding pressure after the primary injection to make up for the shrinkage of the plastic resulting from cooling. In the production of pen barrels, holding pressure helps maintain the smooth outer surface and precise internal dimensions. And then ensuring a snug fit with other components like the pen refill.

Cooling and Solidification

Molds have been created with cooling channels which improves the cooling rate of the molten state of plastics so the solidification happens quickly. Smooth outer surface and uniform size of the finished pen cap components is achieved by this type of cooling. The efficiency of total production is increased because the cycle times are reduced and the system is optimized.

Mold Opening and Ejection

The finished part is ejected after the plastic has set and the mold is opened. Consistent and reliable part removal is guaranteed with HAICHEN machines automatic mold opening and ejection systems. In the production of pen clips, the automated ejection system ensures that each clip is removed without damage, maintaining the high – quality finish and functionality of the part.

Automatic Control

The entire process is controlled by a computer and requires minimal human interaction. The operators have the ability, through a convenient system window. To monitor and change control parameters including but not limited to temperature. As well as injection and pressure parameters, to balance them with required outcomes. Balanced outcomes with set goals is what defines controlled and standard processes.

With these functionalities integrated, HAICHEN’s injection molding machines offer a dependable and efficient solution for pen component manufacturing.
