In fact, the working principle of the PP injection molding machine is similar to the basic working principle of other plastic injection molding machines, which is to heat the molten plastic material and inject it into the mold, after cooling and curing to form the desired plastic product.PP injection molding machine is mainly used to process polypropylene (PP) plastics and has parameter settings suitable for the characteristics of PP materials. Below are the details of how PP injection molding machines work:

Plastic heating and plasticizing

The PP plastic raw materials (usually in the form of pellets) pass through the hopper into the charging section of the injection molding machine. In this section, the screw rotates and transports the raw material forward to the heating zone.

The heater of the barrel of the injection molding machine starts heating and the temperature is usually controlled between 160°C and 250°C (depending on the characteristics of the PP material and the product requirements). The PP plastic raw material gradually melts under the action of the heater and becomes a molten state with good fluidity.

The screw not only plays the role of conveying the plastic raw materials but also further melts the PP material evenly through its own rotational friction. So that it has a good plasticizing effect.

Injection Process

  • At first, when enough molten PP material gathers in front of the screw, the screw stops rotating and moves forward. This is achieved by pushing the screw in a straight line by a hydraulic or servo motor.
  • The forward pressure of the screw injects the molten PP material into the mold cavity through the nozzle. This process is called “injection”. The injection speed and injection pressure are precisely controlled according to the product demand to ensure that the plastic fills the mold and avoids material shortages or air bubbles.
  • After the injection is complete, the screw continues to maintain pressure, known as the packing phase, to ensure that the material is replenished during the cooling and curing of the plastic, preventing shrinkage and denting of the product.

Cooling and curing

  • After the PP material is injected into the mold, the mold begins to cool. Cooling is done through the mold’s cooling water system, which usually uses cooling water to remove heat from the mold.
  • During the cooling process, the molten PP material gradually solidifies to form the final part shape. The length of the cooling time depends on the thickness of the part, the mold design, and the thermal conductivity of the PP material.

Mold opening and product removal

  • When the PP material in the mold is completely cured, the injection molding machine control system will open the mold. When the mold is opened, the moving mold and the fixed mold are separated, exposing the cooled plastic products.
  • At this time, the manipulator or ejection mechanism of the injection molding machine ejects or takes out the product from the mold. At last, after the product is removed, the mold is closed and ready for the next injection cycle.
